Why are people suddenly parking in the strip mall next to Whole Foods instead of finding a spot on Main Street?
For years, the stretch of Post Road West between the Merritt Parkway ramp and downtown was known mostly for everyday errands. It held the dry cleaner, the bank branch, and a changing mix of takeout counters. Main Street offered a different kind of outing. That pattern held for a decade, and then one lease changed the mix.
The Space That Sat Empty Long Enough to Notice
At 361 Post Road West, in the White Birch Center, a restaurant called The Naan operated for years before going dark. The space sat empty for a time. Then in December 2025, word came that Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, the New Haven pizzeria that opened its first oven in 1925, had signed a lease with Saugatuck Real Estate LLC for the 3,529-square-foot space. Construction started early in 2026. The restaurant opened its doors on June 1.
That is a notable addition to the corridor. Pepe's built a coal-fired oven with bricks trucked in from New Haven and a cast iron door designed to match the original at the Wooster Street location. The Westport restaurant seats about 110 people, runs 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, and sits between Whole Foods and a small run of local shops that includes M. Train Studio, Lille Shoppe, and A&S Fine Foods. Jennifer Bimonte-Kelly, a co-owner and granddaughter of founder Frank Pepe, announced the opening on behalf of her sisters Bernadette and Genevieve and cousins Anthony, Francis, and Lisa. This is the chain's ninth Connecticut location and 18th on the East Coast.
For Post Road West, a 110-seat destination with a hundred-year reputation offers a new reason to stop. If Wooster Street has been a forty-minute detour for Westport residents chasing a specific pie, that detour just got shorter.
Main Street's Own Answer Arrived First
Main Street added a new dining option earlier in the year. In February 2026, Felice opened its first Connecticut location at 38 Main Street, the Tuscan-inspired Italian restaurant that has run dining rooms on Manhattan's Upper East Side since 2007 and later expanded to Long Island and South Florida. Founder and managing director Jacopo Giustiniani framed the Westport opening as a natural extension of a customer base that had already moved north.
"As our longtime New York guests establish roots throughout the region, we're growing alongside them," Giustiniani said of the expansion into Connecticut, according to Moffly Lifestyle Media.
Felice is a full dining room with a curated wine list built around small independent producers, the kind of restaurant that gives a Main Street evening a reason to run three hours instead of one. Between Felice on the east end and Pepe's now anchoring the west end, downtown Westport spent the first half of 2026 building two separate cases for staying in town rather than driving to Norwalk, Fairfield, or New Haven for a serious meal.
The Ones Still Filling In
Not every opening on this year's list has landed yet, and the gap between announcement and doors-open tells its own story about how these things actually move.
Chef Bill Taibe's hi'Amba, an all-day bakery, café, and restaurant built around Eastern Mediterranean, North African, and Southwest Asian flavors, is set to open at 33 Jesup Road. As of late August, the concept was described as weeks from opening, with Jerusalem bagels, pita from the oven, Lebanese man'oushe, and a coffee program built around Ilse Coffee on the early menu. Taibe calls the idea "Eastern Mediterranean Kawa Ni." Expect it to be open by the time the fall calendar fills in, though an exact date had not been made public as of that report.
Gruel Britannia, the Fairfield restaurant known for its British menu, announced a second Westport location at 161 Cross Highway back in spring 2025, moving into the space that most recently housed The Porch at Christie's. Owner and chef Karen Hubrich shared the news directly.
"We're opening a second GB in Westport at the old Porch at Christie's on Cross Highway," Hubrich said, according to Patch.
More than a year later, no opening date has been made public for the Cross Highway location.
What's Actually on the Calendar This Month
Restaurants aside, September in Westport has its own short list worth circling if you have not already:
- TEDx Westport: Ideas Worth Sharing runs at the Westport Library on September 13 starting at 4 p.m.
- The Levitt Pavilion has shows scheduled for September 13 and September 17.
- The Westport Rotary Lobsterfest returns to 60 Compo Beach Road on September 19 starting at 3 p.m., and as of this writing tickets were already running low.
None of these require a reservation weeks out the way a table at Felice on a Friday might. They are the kind of plans you make on a Tuesday for the coming weekend, and this month there are enough of them clustered together that skipping all three takes actual effort.
Two Ends, One Downtown
The real story this year is not any single opening. It is that downtown Westport now has new dining options at both ends. For most of the last decade, Main Street was a familiar destination, while Post Road West was best known for errands. Pepe's adds a dining option on the west end, complementing Felice on Main Street.
That adds another option for a Tuesday night. With Pepe's open by Whole Foods, Post Road West offers a dining choice alongside Main Street. Whether the new mix holds past its first season is a question another year of foot traffic may help answer.
For now, if you have been defaulting to Main Street out of habit, White Birch Center is worth the extra two minutes of parking search. And if hi'Amba's papered windows finally come down before the leaves do, that corner of Jesup Road may end up being the third address people start planning around.
